About Us

Power of the Ballot bus tour 2024

National Coalition on Black Civic Participation (NCBCP), founded on May 5,1976, is a non-profit, national civil rights organization dedicated to increasing civic engagement, voter participation, equal & equitable opportunities in Black and under-served urban & rural communities. For nearly 50 years, the NCBCP has been at the forefront of empowering communities through its leadership development, women & girls’ empowerment, organizing, experiential learning and research programs and initiatives.

With a commitment to coalition-building, we unite organizations and intergenerational leaders across local, state and national levels to ensure civic and voting power is realized and protected for all Americans. Our reach is intergenerational and expansive, bringing together 80 national organizations, 12 state-based affiliates/partners, networks and a diverse board and staff---representing: civil rights, business, labor, civic, women, men, LGBTQIA, youth, families, education, faith, public policy makers, researchers, technology and others.

The National Coalition adopted a year-round civic empowerment program structure in 2003 and has established twelve (12) state-based affiliates and networks to maximize its ability to increase Black civic engagement, community empowerment and voter participation on a year-round basis through its signature programs and initiatives---Black Women’s Roundtable, Black Youth Vote, Unity Empowerment Campaigns and the NCBCP Thomas W. Dortch Jr. Institute for Leadership Development, Civic Engagement, Economic Empowerment & Social Justice and Southern Regional Office, anchored at Clark Atlanta University.
